What's New?
January, 2009
I am in love with Abraham Lincoln's face . . . there, I said it. I find it strangely beautiful. It is his 200th birthday, and I have found a way to honor the man in my own particular style. Twice.
This past November, as my wife Pat and I were driving to Chelsea, Michigan to deliver the artwork for our first book together (see below), I became obsessed with the idea of painting a large portrait of one of our greatest Presidents. Within a day of returning home, I began to carefully study his face, thanks to a large number of available photos, and started slinging oil paint on canvas. I am happy to say that his portrait is finally done.
This led me to think that maybe I could also sculpt a clay bust of Lincoln. I don't think of myself as a sculptor, and certainly have no training in the field, but I have always wanted to try it, so . . . I leapt in without thinking!
At this point I have not decided what to do with the sculpture. I am still a few days away from completion. It is built up from oil-based clay, will never dry, and if I ever hope to make a cast of it, I will need to make a flexible, two-piece mold. After that, who knows?
Happy 200th Birthday, Mr. President.
By the end of April, Pat and I will be able to start promoting our first joint venture, B is for Battle Cry: A Civil War Alphabet . This will be my 5th children's book for Sleeping Bear Press, and Pat's introduction to the world as a published author. She did a wonderful job of illuminating various aspects of the Civil War through poetry and prose, and I enjoyed creating the accompanying artwork. We are very excited to share this with you!
