Created from plywood, insulation foam, epoxy putty, epoxy resin (water effect), glass paint. Made to be hands-on and very simplified with a bright color scheme.

These mannequins (from various manufacturers) were transformed by various means to create a more uniform and realistic appearance - grinding away cheekbones, resculpting features and hair with epoxy putty and energetically applying oil paints.
The final images are of a more involved transformation to create Hortense McKay, a Minnesota World War 2 Army nurse who rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Between 2009 and 2010 I created this life-sized bronze bust of my favorite president as a way to finally experience the process of turning a clay sculpture (my first and ONLY portrait in clay) into a finished piece that will be around long after I am gone . . . WHEW!
